First Aid when Seeing Your Little Spasm Fever

Fever in some children can be followed by seizures. This condition is known as febrile convulsions. When faced with it, Mother is recommended to be vigilant but remain calm. Therefore, Mother needs to know the steps of first aid for your child who has a febrile seizure. Febrile seizures can affect children aged 3 months to 5 years, although children aged 1 to 1.5 years are more common. The cause of a child's body spasms during a fever is not known with certainty, but this is known to be associated with an increase in body temperature that is too fast and the child's body's ability to adapt to an increase in body temperature.

The Condition of Children with Fever

Before learning how to help your child, you need to know how to determine whether your child has a febrile seizure or not. A number of the following symptoms can help you recognize febrile seizures in your child:
  • Body temperature rises to more than 38 °.
  • His whole body, especially the legs and arms, looks shaky, stiff, or jerk uncontrolled.
  • The Little groaned, bit his tongue hard, or urinated suddenly, and his eyes rolled upwards.
  • Little does not respond to Mother, for example does not answer when invited to play or talk.
  • The little one fainted or lost consciousness after the seizure.

First Aid Steps when a Child Has a Fever

When you see your child experiencing a febrile seizure, Mother is recommended not to panic. Mother is expected to remain calm, in order to be able to provide first aid well. The following are some steps to help children who have febrile seizures:
  • Place the child in a level place.
  • The place should be wide and free, so the child will not be hit or crushed by certain objects during seizures.
  • Position the child sleeping sideways, to prevent choking during seizures.
  • Loosen the clothes, especially on the neck.
  • Do not force to hold the child's body movements. Just keep the body position safe.
  • Do not put anything in his mouth, including drinks or medicines.
  • Say soothing words so the child feels more comfortable.
  • Note how long the child has had a seizure.
  • Observe his condition during seizures, especially if he has difficulty breathing or his face becomes pale and bluish. This indicates that he is lacking oxygen and requires immediate medical treatment.
  • If possible, record incidents when the child is having a seizure, so the doctor can know with certainty what kind of seizure the child is experiencing.
Febrile seizures generally last for 1-2 minutes. After that, the child may become more fussy and confused for a few hours, before he is exhausted and finally asleep.

Fever Seizures that Require Emergency Management

After giving first aid, Mother still needs to take Little to the doctor even though the spasm has stopped. This is important to do, so the doctor can examine the condition of the Little One and find out the cause of the seizures he experienced. Mother even needs to immediately bring Little to the doctor or call an ambulance if he experiences:
  • Seizures for more than 5 minutes.
  • Seizures are only in some parts of the body, not all.
  • Difficulty breathing and his face or lips turn bluish.
  • Seizures recur within 24 hours.
Most febrile seizures in children are not dangerous and are not a sign of epilepsy or brain damage. Febrile seizures also do not cause a decrease in children's ability to learn or mental disorders. However, Mother still needs to be vigilant. In rare cases, a fever followed by seizures can be a sign of meningitis or other serious disorders. When your child has a seizure, Mother needs to give first aid to the seizure fever properly. Therefore, try to stay calm. If the child has a febrile seizure that requires emergency help, immediately take it to the doctor to get treatment.
